October 26, 2006 Meeting Summary
Marian called the meeting to order and announced the theme of the meeting -
Juggling Multiple Priorities. She also discussed the multiple priorities
she has had to juggle lately.
Lori G was the Wordmaster/Grammarian. She chose "surmount" as the
word of the day. It means to overcome, conquer or to ascend to the top of.
She reminded the group to take a pause instead of saying "um" or "ah".
Laura G was the Timer. She shared that her challenge is juggling
running the house and raising her children.
Jeff S was the only speaker. His speech was titled "The Jump Stop
and Triple Threat Position" and the speech was to focus on body language.
Jeff and his wife have recently "volunteered" to coach the Totino Grace JV
Girls Basketball team. His wife has coaching experience, but he only has
experience as a player. The Jump Stop was the favorite move of his high
school coach. He went on to explain the move, demonstrate it and identify
the benefits. The benefits include that it helps you control your motion,
avoid penalties, and be in a good position for your next move. The Jump
Stop puts you in the Triple Threat Position. When you are in this
position, you are able to pivot on either foot and quickly shoot or pass.
This makes it harder on the player defending you.
Laura B lead table topics. Bill S shared his abilities
juggling tennis balls (novice level) and juggling work priorities
(experienced). For work he uses two approaches - triage and priority
lists. Lori G shared her secret for juggling house work and raising
her children. She involves her children in the cleaning! Laura G
shared her prioritization strategy. Her children are always #1. She fits
the other priorities in in small steps in between spending time with her
children. She also involves her daughter in house work. As a 3 year old,
she enjoys helping her mother.
Mark H evaluated Jeff's speech. He had many positive comments to
share: excellent topic selection for this speech assignment, a good
introduction that set the stage very well and incorporated humor, good
gestures, thorough explanations, good organization and a good prop. He
offered one suggestion - to use a person from his audience to help
demonstrate the moves (e.g, pass the ball to him). Overall, great speech
Jeff!
Kathy J was our Inspiration/Humorist and shared a very funny Dr.
Suess poem about loving your job. It had a great surprise ending!
Laura gave the Timer's report: Jeff's speech - 5:44, Bill's table topic -
2:00, Lori's table topic - 1:19, Laura's table topic - 1:47, Mark's
evaluation - 2:42, and Kathy's Humor - 1:20.
Lori reported that Laura B used the word of the day and that there
were 16 "ahs" and "ums" - not too bad! Fun uses of the English language
included "control your body", "triage juggling", and "hiking his pants up
all the way".
Bill provided an evaluation of our meeting. Overall, everyone did a good
job. The Spirit Award went to Jeff Streeper.
Mark also evaluated Laura as timer today for her Competent Leader
designation. He provided her a written evaluation.
Laura reported that Bill completed his CTM.
Marian and Mark reminded the group about the membership event on Monday at
which Bob Senkler will speak. Mark will emcee and share the benefits he's
received from his membership. Three members will respond to prearranged
table topics about their membership in Toastmasters. Jeff Streeper will
represent our club. Bob will speak after Table Topics. Volunteers are
needed to staff the table outside the Achievement Room where newsletters
and applications will be available. Mark also let us know that Sarah
Johnson has submitted her application and another associate has indicated
that he plans to join our group. That would bring us to 19 members - just
one shy of the minimum for club recognition. Hopefully Bob's speech helps
us get new members!
Marian thanked the group for the helpful tips on juggling priorities and
adjourned the meeting.
